  • Why work with a one-man band?

Valid question, to be sure. One answer is convenience for you. When you work with dan weerts creative, you’ll be talking to the marketing consultant, photographer, copywriting and web designer all-in-one. There is no wondering who to call when you have a question.

A second answer: greater effectiveness. When I worked in advertising agencies, I observed that information gets lost in handoffs. You talk to the account executive and tell him what you want. The account exec then passes the project to the creative director who gives direction to the copywriter who creates the concept and to the photographer who captures the necessary images to support the concept, all of which then goes to graphic design for layout.

Have you ever played the game of “telephone”? Yeah. Exactly.

No matter how good the ad agency’s processes are, things get lost in transmission. This is not to say that having separate roles and skill sets is a bad thing; there are clearly some advantages to that. But there are also definite advantages to the client directly talking to the same person who will shoot the photos / video, write the copy, and do the web design. When I’m doing those things, I’m remembering what lit up your eyes when you explained your mission. I’m thinking about the passion in your voice when you outlined your business goals. And that will come out in the creative.

  • But seriously – how can you do all of this yourself?

On big photo shoots and video projects, I do enlist some help. One of my daughters is a very capable photographer and acts as my second shooter. My son is a professional videographer and helps me with the bigger video projects.

  • Sounds like you are jack-of-all-trades. Are you actually any good at all this marketing stuff?

Guilty as charged. That’s how God made me; I love variety. Jacks-of-all-trades are, as they say, the master of none. But I’m really quite good at a lot of creative work — plus marketing management — and have many years’ experience doing just that. But you can be the judge by looking through examples of my work.

  • Why would I want to work with a freelancer rather than a full-time marketing consultant / photographer / web designer / ad agency?

Truthfully, you might not. It depends on what you want. There must be a good fit between your needs and the marketer’s offerings. If money is no object, hire the biggest and best marketing firm you can find. But money is almost always a factor, right? As a small side-business, I have low overhead and reasonable rates reflecting the efficiency of one person who does it all: marketing consulting, photography, copywriting, web design, etc.

If you have a big volume of work that needs to done super quickly, then you will be better off calling an ad agency that has lots of staff. But if you are flexible on timing, and like the idea of a one-stop shop, let’s talk.

  • What types of clients do you work for?

Small businesses and non-profits in small towns seems to be my niche. That makes sense, because they typically don’t have a marketing department, don’t have the budget to hire an ad agency, appreciate a no-nonsense approach, and usually have out-of-date websites that are not representing them well. They need help, and want to call one person to take care of it all.

I make it easy for them, at a reasonable price, and without the condescending attitude of a big-city firm.

  • Where are you located?

I live on a small acreage between Remington and Lafayette / West Lafayette, Indiana, so naturally most of my clients are in the greater Lafayette, IN area, such as Remington, Wolcott, Rensselaer, Francesville, etc.

In addition, since my wife and I both grew up in central Illinois and still have family and friends there, I serve clients there too, e.g. Morton, Eureka, Bloomington, Peoria, Cissna Park, Illinois.
